Heritage Awards - 2011

2011 Heritage Awards

Heritage Mississauga first started honouring members and groups from the community in 1995 to mark its 35th Anniversary. Since then we have honoured over 100 individuals or groups for their contribution to preservation and conservation of Mississauga’s heritage.

On Thursday February 17th at the Lakeview Golf Course on Dixie Road, Heritage Mississauga honoured 17 more heritage heroes from this community for their role in ensuring the heritage of our city is preserved for today and future generations. Each year the Board of Directors presents three awards: Lifetime Membership Award, MHF Heritage Award and Special Recognition Awards.  As well, they invite the Membership to nominate individuals or groups who they feel should be recognized for Members’ Choice Awards for their particular contributions.

Two other awards are presented during the evening.  The “Betty Ross Memorial Award” first presented in 2010, is dedicated to long-serving and dedicated volunteer, the late Betty Ross. Betty who was an active member and supporter of the Museums of Mississauga, Heritage Mississauga, and the Mississauga South Historical Society, amongst many other organizations.  Betty dedicated herself to helping promote and preserve our heritage.  She gave countless hours to the success of heritage programs in the city. Dedication to the success of all our heritage resources is what Betty exemplified.

This award in her honour is presented annually by the Staff of Heritage Mississauga and the Friends of the Museums of Mississauga. The recipient will be a person who does not have to be a member of either organization but who has contributed significant volunteer time and effort towards supporting the endeavours and works of staff. Nominations are made by the staff of Heritage Mississauga and the Museums of Mississauga in alternating years.

In its third year the "Cultural Heritage Property Awards" are presented by the Mississauga Heritage Advisory Committee in partnership with Heritage Mississauga.  These awards are presented for excellence in successful adaptive reuse and preservation, restoration and enhancement of a designated cultural property. Nominations for these awards are recieved under strict criteria. A team from both organizations reviews and selects a winner.  Nominations for this year are listed below.  The winner of this award was announced on February 17th.
